Mararikulam (Marari) Beach: A Local’s Guide

Golden sand, fishing boats and sunsets over the Arabian Sea — a quiet alternative to Kerala's busier beaches, 2 km from Casa Marari.

By the Casa Marari team Updated about 2 km (5 min drive) from Casa Marari

Mararikulam Beach — almost everyone calls it Marari Beach — is one of the most peaceful stretches of sand in Kerala. It sits in a working fishing village in Alappuzha district, around 11–15 km north of Alleppey town. There is no strip of shacks and souvenir shops here; instead you get wide golden sand, rows of coconut palms, wooden fishing boats pulled up on the shore and a horizon that turns orange every evening.

Casa Marari is about 2 km from Marari Beach — five minutes by car or an easy ride on one of our free bicycles.

What makes Marari different

  • It is still a fishing village. Early mornings, you can watch fishermen launch their boats and haul in nets. Ask before you photograph people up close.
  • It is quiet. Marari is a beach for long walks, reading under a palm and swimming on calm days — not for nightlife.
  • Sunsets face the sea. The beach faces west over the Arabian Sea, so the evening light is spectacular. Arrive by 5:30 pm in winter.

Things to do at Marari Beach

  1. Walk the shoreline at sunrise or sunset — the sand is firm and you can walk for kilometres.
  2. Watch the fishing boats come in and see the morning catch being sorted.
  3. Swim on calm days (November–March) close to the shore.
  4. Cycle the village lanes between the beach and the backwaters — our bicycles are free for guests.
  5. Eat fresh seafood — ask our kitchen for a Kerala fish curry or fish pollichathu.
  6. Combine it with Chethy Beach, a smaller, even quieter beach just north — see our Chethy Beach guide.

Swimming and safety

Kerala’s Arabian Sea coast can have strong currents, especially from June to September during the south-west monsoon, when the sea is rough and swimming is unsafe. From November to March the water is usually calm. Wherever you swim, stay close to the shore, do not swim alone or after dark, and listen to local advice.

Best time to visit

November to March brings sunny days, low humidity and calm seas — the best beach weather. April and May are hot but quiet and good value. The monsoon (June–September) is lush and dramatic but not a swimming season. Read more in our guide to the best time to visit Marari.

How to get to Marari Beach

The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport (about 80 km). The closest railway station is Mararikulam, with more trains stopping at Cherthala and Alappuzha. From any of these, a taxi or auto-rickshaw will bring you to the beach. Full directions are in our how to reach Marari Beach guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to swim at Marari Beach?

The sea is calmest from November to March. Even then, swim only near the shore, never alone and never during the June–September monsoon, when currents are strong. Lifeguard cover is limited, so follow any flags or advice from local fishermen.

How far is Marari Beach from Alleppey?

Mararikulam is roughly 11–15 km north of Alappuzha (Alleppey) town, about 30 minutes by road. Casa Marari is about 2 km from the beach.

Is Marari Beach crowded?

Rarely. Unlike Kovalam or Varkala, Marari has no busy beach-shack strip. You will share the sand mostly with fishermen, families and a few travellers, even in peak season.
